Don Julio Anejo 1942
$322.86
Don Julio 1942 comes from La Primavera distillery in the highlands of Jalisco, where the Gonzalez family has produced tequila since 1942. The expression honors the year Don Julio Gonzalez began his distilling career. Made from 100 percent blue Weber agave grown in the red volcanic soils of Los Altos, this anejo benefits from the highland terroir that typically yields sweeter, fruitier agave compared to lowland varieties. The agave is slow-roasted in traditional brick ovens for 72 hours before fermentation and double distillation in pot stills. What sets 1942 apart is its extended aging, spending a minimum of two and a half years in American white oak barrels, significantly longer than the one-year minimum required for anejo classification. This patience in the barrel develops remarkable depth while maintaining the agave character that cheaper aged tequilas often lose to wood influence. The result is a sipping tequila that bridges the gap between anejo and extra anejo categories. The distinctive tall amber bottle has become iconic, though the liquid inside justifies the presentation. For collectors or anyone seeking a refined aged tequila that rewards slow, contemplative drinking, 1942 delivers complexity without overwhelming oak or artificial sweetness.
