The Wine
La Rioja Alta is one of the old guard in Rioja, and Viña Arana is their Garnacha-leaning Gran Reserva, built for the table rather than the trophy shelf. A decade-plus of age has softened the tannin just enough to sit alongside roast lamb, slow-braised short rib, or anything with a serious pan sauce without overwhelming it.
Worth Knowing
Three years in American oak, in barrels the estate builds itself. La Rioja Alta still keeps its own coopers on site, which almost nobody does any more.
