The Wine
Mountain Cabernet, Napa’s other register
Mt. Veeder sits in the Mayacamas range, the volcanic mountain chain that divides Napa from Sonoma. The estate climbs from 1,000 to 2,600 feet, where the vines grow in thin, rocky volcanic soils and fight for every resource.
That stress is the point. Mountain-grown Cabernet is a different thing from valley-floor fruit: smaller berries, deeper colour, denser tannin structure, and a concentration that comes not from irrigation but from the land itself. The 2021 is a textbook example of the Mt. Veeder style: powerful but composed, built to develop over a decade.
Winemaker Todd Carpenter draws on fruit from the estate’s oldest blocks, and the 2021 drew a rare 99-point score from James Suckling, who called it dreamy.

The Estate
Mt. Brave, in the Mayacamas range
Mt. Brave is a single-estate Cabernet from the volcanic hillsides of Mt. Veeder, one of Napa’s most distinctive mountain AVAs. The estate focuses entirely on Cabernet Sauvignon grown at altitude, where cool nights, thin soils and volcanic rock push the vines to produce something far more concentrated than the valley floor allows.
The house is best known for the structured, age-worthy character of its Cabernet. The 2021 is a particularly exceptional vintage from an estate that rarely disappoints.
