The Wine
Carnival of Love is Mollydooker's Shiraz from the Gateway vineyard in McLaren Vale. The 2021 is 100% Shiraz, fermented and aged in new American oak barrels, at 16% alcohol. Sarah and Sparky Marquis started Mollydooker in 2005, and the name is Australian slang for a left-hander, which both of them are. The 2012 Carnival of Love was ranked second in Wine Spectator's list of the top wines of 2014. It goes with red meat off the grill or a slow-braised lamb shoulder.
Worth Knowing
Mollydooker is Australian slang for left hander, and both founders are left handed. The label asks you to invert and shake the unopened bottle, which releases the nitrogen used at bottling and opens the aromatics up.
