The Wine
One estate, one wine, every year
Continuum is the Mondavi family’s flagship, a single estate red born the year the family began again. After Robert Mondavi Winery was sold in 2004, Tim Mondavi, his father Robert and his sister Marcia set out to make one wine, from one place, every vintage. Continuum is that wine.
That place is Sage Mountain Vineyard, high on Pritchard Hill in the eastern hills of Napa Valley. The vines sit well above the valley floor on thin, iron-rich volcanic soil, where cool air and long sun give Cabernet Sauvignon real structure without heaviness. It is a Bordeaux-style blend, Cabernet Sauvignon at its core, rounded out with Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot from the same hillside.
The result is a wine built for the long haul: dark-fruited and savoury, firmly structured, and capable of evolving for two decades in the cellar. Continuum is widely counted among Napa’s benchmark estate reds, a modern California first growth in everything but name. Open one for a milestone, or lay it down and let time do the rest.

Tasting Notes
Nose
Cassis and black cherry lifted by graphite, cedar and crushed violet, with the savoury, iron-rich note of Pritchard Hill’s volcanic soil underneath.
Palate
Full but composed: layered blackcurrant, dark plum and espresso, framed by fine mountain-grown tannins and a thread of bright acidity that keeps the whole thing lifted.
Finish
Long, mineral and quietly powerful, the kind of close built for a decade or more in the cellar rather than tonight.

James Suckling99 pts
“Blackberries, dark wet soil and blackcurrants. Graphite, too. So aromatic. Pure fruit. Full-bodied with superbly polished, fine tannins that draw you down through the center of palate. Extremely layered and the texture is so curated, giving wonderful persistence. Real plushness and fine, velvety texture.”
Wine Advocate, Joe Czerwinski98 pts
“Medium to full-bodied, the palate is firm, with super-ripe, grainy tannins and fantastic tension framing energetic, tightly knit layers, finishing on a long-lingering ferrous note, plus a spray of rose water and candied violets.”
Vinous, Antonio Galloni97 pts
“Black cherry, mocha, gravel, dried flowers and raspberry jam infuse the 2019 with tons of nuance. Time in the glass brings out lovely energy to balance things out.”
Wine Spectator95 pts
“Expressive and vivid, with cassis, blueberry reduction and plum preserves mixed amicably together, while licorice, warm fruitcake, sassafras and baker’s chocolate line the finish.”

The Estate
Continuum Estate, the Mondavi family
Continuum Estate is wholly owned and farmed by the Mondavi family. Tim Mondavi, who spent decades making wine at Robert Mondavi Winery, leads the winemaking, and the next generation now works the vineyard alongside him. The family lives on the property: this is a home estate, not a label.
Everything points at one goal. There is no second wine and no shortcut, only a single bottling that has to carry the estate’s name each year. That focus, on one hillside and one wine, is the whole idea behind Continuum.
