The Wine
Pauillac at its most serious, and the 2005 vintage means this bottle has had twenty years to pull itself together. Serve it with a simple roasted rack of lamb, nothing that competes, because the tannin structure here is built to work against red meat and the last thing it needs is a sauce fighting back.
Worth Knowing
Baron James de Rothschild bought Lafite at public auction in Paris on the 8th of August 1868, for 4.4 million francs. He died three months later, without ever tasting a harvest made under his name. His sons carried it on and the family has held the estate ever since.
