The Wine

Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino

Il Poggione is in Sant'Angelo in Colle, about 10 km south of the town of Montalcino. Its vineyards run from 150 to 450 metres above sea level.

The Brunello is 100% Sangiovese from the estate's oldest vineyards, picked by hand. It ferments for 15 to 20 days in stainless steel tanks with native yeasts, with the cap of skins kept under the wine.

It then ages in large French oak casks of 30 to 50 hectolitres, followed by time in bottle before release.

The Estate

Il Poggione, in Sant'Angelo in Colle

The estate was founded by Lavinio Franceschi, a landowner from Florence. Leopoldo and Livia, the current generation of the family, run it today.

Il Poggione was one of the first estates to sell its wine as Brunello di Montalcino, and was a founding member of the Brunello di Montalcino Consortium.

The present winery was built in 2004 in the middle of the property. The casks sit five metres below the fermentation cellar, and the oak is seasoned outdoors for at least four years before the cooper uses it.

Vigna Paganelli, planted in 1964, is one of Montalcino's oldest vineyards and supplies the estate's Riserva.
