The Wine
The wine that started the Super Tuscans
Tignanello is the wine that rewrote the rules for Italian reds. First made in 1971 by Marchese Piero Antinori and the legendary oenologist Giacomo Tachis, it broke with Chianti tradition: no white grapes in the blend, a measure of Cabernet alongside the Sangiovese, and ageing in French oak barriques.
It takes its name from the Tignanello vineyard on the family’s estate at San Casciano, in the hills of the Chianti Classico zone. The blend is built on Sangiovese, rounded out with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.
Half a century on, it is still regarded as the original Super Tuscan, the bottle that changed what the world expected of Italian wine. Powerful, polished and built to age.
