The Bottle

El Tequileno is one of the oldest continuously operating tequila distilleries in Mexico, founded in 1959 in the town of Tequila, Jalisco. The distillery remains family-owned and operates with a commitment to traditional methods that predates the modern craft tequila movement. Gran Reserva Reposado is made from 100 percent blue Weber agave grown in the lowland valley region surrounding the town of Tequila, where volcanic soils and lower elevation produce agave with earthier, more mineral-driven characteristics compared to highland fruit-forward expressions. Production at El Tequileno relies on brick ovens for slow-cooking the agave and copper pot stills for distillation, maintaining practices largely unchanged for decades. This reposado rests in American oak barrels for approximately six months, enough time to integrate soft wood notes without overwhelming the agave character. The result is a balanced tequila that showcases both raw material quality and restrained barrel influence. El Tequileno has earned respect among tequila enthusiasts for its consistency and value, often compared favorably to bottles at twice the price. For anyone building a home bar or seeking an honest reposado for sipping or elevated cocktails, this bottling delivers genuine craft at a reasonable price point.
