W. Heron created the original recipe as a way to smooth out the harsh whiskeys of the era. The brand has changed ownership several times over the decades and is currently produced by Sazerac, the New Orleans-based spirits company that also owns a large portfolio of American whiskeys and spirits.

Southern Comfort is built on a base of neutral grain spirit rather than whiskey, flavored with fruit, spice, and a proprietary blend of botanicals that gives it a distinctly sweet, approachable character. The dominant notes come from peach and citrus, rounded out by warming spice and vanilla.

At 35 percent alcohol by volume, it sits on the lower end of the liqueur category and is designed for easy drinking. It works well in mixed drinks, particularly with cola, lemonade, or orange juice, and has long been a fixture in casual cocktail culture across North America.

It is not a sipping spirit in the traditional sense, but it fills a specific role as a crowd-pleasing, affordable mixer that most drinkers will recognize. At this price point it represents solid value for home bartenders stocking a versatile back bar.
