SKYY Vodka was founded in San Francisco in 1992 by entrepreneur Maurice Kanbar, who developed the brand around a claim that its quadruple-distillation and triple-filtration process would reduce congeners and produce a cleaner spirit.

The vodka is made from American grain, primarily wheat and corn sourced from the Midwest, and is produced at a large commercial facility.

SKYY gained early recognition for its distinctive cobalt blue bottle, which became something of a design icon in the 1990s and helped establish the brand in the American premium vodka segment at a time when that category was just beginning to take shape.
