Ron Zacapa 23 is produced by Industrias Licoreras de Guatemala at the Tulula distillery, situated on a plain roughly 2,300 metres above sea level in the Guatemalan highlands.

While Guatemala is not a Caribbean island, it shares the sugarcane heritage and tropical aging conditions that define the broader Latin American rum tradition.

The rum is made from virgin sugarcane honey, the first pressing of sugarcane juice concentrated into a syrup, rather than molasses, which contributes a notably rich, sweet base.

Distillation uses a combination of column and pot stills, and the spirit is then aged using the Solera system, a fractional blending method where rums of different ages are cycled through a series of casks including American whiskey, Pedro Ximenez sherry, Oloroso sherry, and fine wine barrels.

The "23" in the name refers to the oldest rum in the blend, not the average age. The result is a deeply layered, dessert-style rum with significant complexity drawn from the diversity of cask types. It is commonly served neat or with a single large ice cube.
