Oban Distillery sits in the small fishing harbor town of Oban on Scotland's western coast, occupying a unique position between the Highlands and the Islands.
This geography shapes the whisky's character, blending the coastal influence of island malts with the fruitier, more delicate notes typical of Highland production. The distillery itself is one of Scotland's oldest, founded in 1794, and remains one of the smallest in Scotland with just two stills.
Oban 14 Year Old is aged exclusively in ex-bourbon American oak casks, allowing the spirit's coastal character to remain prominent without heavy sherry influence. The whisky presents a medium-bodied dram with a distinctive maritime saltiness balanced by honeyed sweetness and citrus.
You will find gentle peat smoke here, far subtler than Islay expressions but present enough to add complexity. The 14-year maturation brings depth without overwhelming oak tannins. At 43% ABV, it delivers sufficient weight to carry the flavors without excessive alcohol burn.
This bottling works well for those seeking a gateway to peated Scotch or anyone who appreciates coastal whiskies with restraint. It pairs naturally with seafood, particularly oysters or smoked salmon, and serves equally well as an evening sipper.
