Not a wine, but worth keeping at the table. This Friulian amaro has the bitterness and herbal backbone to cut through rich desserts or a cheese course, and at this price it earns its place as the digestivo that actually closes a meal properly.
Nonino is a family-run distillery based in Friuli, northeastern Italy, founded in 1897 and widely credited with modernizing Italian grappa production in the latter half of the twentieth century.
Quintessentia is their signature amaro, and it stands apart from most Italian bitters because it is built on a base of aged grappa and UE, their proprietary eau-de-vie distilled from whole fruit.
The botanicals include a range of roots, herbs, and spices, among them gentian, rhubarb, saffron, licorice, and tamarind, which are macerated and then blended with the aged spirit.
The result is an amaro that sits in a distinct category: it has the bitterness expected of the style but is softened considerably by the fruit-forward base and a notable sweetness that makes it more approachable than bitter-forward examples like Fernet.
Quintessentia is aged in small oak barrels, which adds a layer of warmth and integration that many unaged amari lack.
At this price point it is genuinely worth the investment for anyone interested in Italian digestif culture or looking for a serious after-dinner pour that can be served neat, over a large ice cube, or used as a complex modifier in stirred cocktails.
It is a benchmark product from a producer with a well-documented record.
