Nikka Coffey Malt Whisky comes from the Miyagikyo distillery in Japan, produced using a traditional Coffey still, a continuous column still design dating back to the 1830s.
What makes this expression unusual is that Nikka runs 100 percent malted barley through the Coffey still rather than the grain typically associated with this distillation method. The result is a whisky that bridges the gap between the richness of malt whisky and the lighter, more delicate character of grain whisky.
Nikka, founded by Masataka Taketsuru in 1934, operates two distilleries in Japan and has built a reputation for technical precision and quality. The Coffey stills at Miyagikyo were installed in 1963 and remain central to the distillery's production.
This expression carries no age statement but showcases the house style beautifully. The whisky delivers a notably sweet and creamy profile with prominent notes of vanilla, tropical fruit, and biscuit malt. It sits at 45 percent ABV without chill filtration, preserving texture and flavor intensity.
This is an excellent introduction to Japanese whisky for those who enjoy sweeter, approachable drams, and it works equally well neat, with a splash of water, or in cocktails where its malt character can shine through.
