Nikka Coffey Gin is produced at Miyagikyo Distillery in Japan by Nikka Whisky, a company founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, who trained in Scotland before returning to build one of Japan's most respected distilling operations.
The gin takes its name from the Coffey still, a continuous column still that Nikka employs for distillation and that is more commonly associated with grain whisky production than gin. This unusual choice of still imparts a notably soft, round, and texturally rich character that sets it apart from most European gins.
The botanical bill leans heavily on citrus, with Japanese yuzu, kabosu, amanatsu, and shequasar all contributing to a bright and layered citrus profile. Apple and Japanese sansho pepper round out the blend, with juniper present but deliberately restrained.
The result is a contemporary-style gin that sits closer to the aromatic, fruit-forward end of the spectrum than to the assertively juniper-driven London Dry tradition.
At 47 percent ABV, it carries enough structure to hold up in cocktails, and it performs particularly well in a gin and tonic or a simple highball where its citrus-forward complexity can be appreciated without interference. That said, its silky texture also makes it rewarding neat or over ice.
For anyone curious about how Japanese sensibility and distilling heritage translate into the gin category, this bottle offers a genuinely distinctive and well-executed answer.
