Mijenta Reposado comes from master distiller Ana Maria Romero Mena, one of the few women leading tequila production in Mexico.
The brand was co-founded by beverage industry veteran Mike Dolan and operates out of a distillery in the Jalisco highlands, where agaves benefit from higher altitude, cooler temperatures, and mineral-rich red clay soils.
These highland conditions typically produce sweeter, more fruit-forward agave compared to lowland terroir. Mijenta uses 100 percent blue Weber agave, slow-roasted in traditional brick ovens before fermentation and double distillation in copper pot stills.
The reposado expression rests for four to six months in a combination of American white oak bourbon barrels and Spanish sherry casks, adding layers of dried fruit and subtle spice without overwhelming the agave character. The distillery emphasizes sustainability, from recyclable packaging to fair wages for jimadores.
What sets Mijenta apart is the balance between craft and accessibility. The oak influence remains restrained, allowing cooked agave and citrus to lead while honey and light baking spices fill in the background. This is a reposado built for sipping neat or anchoring a refined cocktail.
Worth considering if you appreciate highland tequila with thoughtful barrel work and a producer committed to transparency.
