Luxardo is the definitive name in maraschino liqueur, and for good reason. The family-owned Italian distillery was founded in Zara in 1821, originally located in what is now Zadar, Croatia, and has been producing this liqueur through a process largely unchanged for two centuries.
The liqueur is made from Marasca cherries, a small, sour variety grown in the Veneto region of Italy, where the Luxardo family relocated after World War II.
Both the fruit and the crushed pits are fermented and distilled, and the resulting spirit is aged in Finnish ashwood vats before being blended with a Marasca cherry syrup.
This production method is what separates Luxardo from cheaper imitations: the inclusion of the pits introduces a subtle, bitter almond quality that gives the liqueur its characteristic depth and complexity. The sweetness is present but restrained, and the overall profile is far drier than most fruit liqueurs.
Bartenders around the world consider it an essential ingredient in classic cocktails including the Aviation, the Last Word, and the Hemingway Daiquiri, and it functions equally well as a measured addition to a Negroni variation or a Sour.
At this price point for 500ml, it represents genuine value for a product that is genuinely irreplaceable in any serious home bar or professional setting.
