La Gritona - Tequila

La Gritona is produced at a small family-owned distillery in the town of Tequila, Jalisco, in the lowlands region known as El Valle. It was founded by Melly Barajas, one of the few female distillery owners in the tequila industry. The name is the Spanish term for a loud, outspoken woman.

The distillery sources 100 percent blue Weber agave from lowland fields, where volcanic soil and a warmer climate give earthier, more herbaceous plants than the highlands. The agaves are cooked in brick ovens and double distilled in copper pot stills.

This is a reposado, rested for about eight months in American oak barrels that previously held bourbon. Barajas runs the operation with an all-female production team and modest output.
