Jagermeister is produced by Mast-Jagermeister SE in Wolfenbuttel, Germany, a company founded by Curt Mast in 1934. The name translates roughly to "master hunter," and the brand has long been associated with German hunting culture, a connection reflected in the iconic stag logo.
The liqueur is made from a blend of 56 botanicals, including roots, herbs, fruits, and spices, though the exact recipe remains proprietary. The ingredients are macerated and then blended with alcohol, water, sugar, and caramel before the liquid is filtered and rested in oak barrels for approximately a year.
The result is a dark, syrupy herbal liqueur bottled at 35% ABV. Jagermeister occupies a genuine place in the world of European herbal digestifs, sitting alongside styles like Fernet and other bittersweet amari. In Germany it has traditionally been consumed as a digestif, served ice cold in small shots.
Internationally it became synonymous with the shot culture of the 1990s and 2000s, though it works equally well stirred into cocktails or served alongside espresso. The 375ml format is a practical size for home bars.
For customers curious about herbal liqueurs without committing to a full bottle, this is a dependable and well-made entry point into the category.
