Hakutsuru - Sayuri Nigori Sake

Cloudy, lightly sweet nigori that softens the heat in spicy ramen or cuts through the fat in gyoza without demanding your full attention.

Hakutsuru is one of Japan's largest and most established sake breweries, founded in 1743 in Nada, Hyogo Prefecture, a region long regarded as the heartland of Japanese sake production.

Sayuri, which translates loosely to "little lily," is their approachable Nigori-style sake, meaning it is coarsely filtered and left with a portion of rice solids in suspension.

This gives the liquid its characteristic cloudy, milky appearance and a noticeably fuller, creamier texture compared to clear filtered styles. The brewing water drawn from Nada's famous Miyamizu mineral-rich springs contributes to a clean fermentation character.

As a Junmai Nigori, it is made with rice, water, yeast, and koji only, without the addition of distilled alcohol. The 300ml format makes it a practical introduction for someone curious about Nigori sake without committing to a full bottle.

It drinks at its best lightly chilled and pairs naturally with spicy food, fresh fruit, or lighter desserts. The sweetness is genuine but not cloying, and the unfiltered texture sets it apart from more polished, delicate grades.

For a customer new to sake or looking for something easy and food-friendly, this is a straightforward and reliable choice from a producer with nearly three centuries of consistent output.
