Grand Marnier Cordon Rouge is produced by the Marnier-Lapostolle family, whose history with this liqueur dates to 1880 when Louis-Alexandre Marnier Lapostolle first blended cognac with the essence of bitter Citrus bigaradia oranges, originally sourced from the Caribbean.
The formula has remained largely unchanged since, setting it apart from triple secs and other orange liqueurs that use neutral spirit as their base. The use of aged cognac gives Cordon Rouge a depth and warmth that purely grain-based orange liqueurs cannot replicate.
The oranges are dried and macerated, and the resulting distillate is blended with Fine Champagne cognac before bottling at 40 percent ABV. This 50ml format is a practical way to try a bottle-bar staple without committing to a full bottle, or to have a precise measure on hand for a recipe.
Cordon Rouge is the standard expression in the Grand Marnier range, sitting below the older Cuvee du Cent-Cinquantenaire and Quintessence expressions. It is widely used in classic cocktails, including the Margarita and the Cosmopolitan, but works equally well served neat or over ice as a light digestif.
Its combination of cognac character and genuine orange flavour makes it a versatile and well-regarded choice.
