Frangelico is an Italian hazelnut liqueur produced in Piedmont, a region in northwestern Italy long associated with some of the world's finest hazelnuts.
The liqueur takes its name and the shape of its distinctive friar-shaped bottle from a legendary hermit monk named Fra Angelico, said to have crafted unique recipes using local wild hazelnuts, berries, and flowers centuries ago. Today Frangelico is produced by the Campari Group, which acquired the brand in 2010.
It is made by macerating toasted hazelnuts in alcohol and water, then blending the extract with cocoa, vanilla, and other natural flavourings before sweetening and bottling at 20 percent alcohol by volume.
The result is a rich, moderately sweet liqueur with a pronounced roasted hazelnut character that remains one of the most recognizable expressions of its kind. Frangelico works well in a wide range of applications.
It is commonly served over ice as a digestif, used in coffee cocktails, or incorporated into dessert drinks such as a Hazelnut Espresso Martini. It also pairs naturally with cream-based cocktails and works as a modifier in stirred whisky drinks where nutty sweetness is welcome.
At this price point it is a versatile and approachable bottle for both home bartenders and those building a well-rounded liqueur selection.
