Flor de Cana is produced at the Compania Licorera de Nicaragua distillery in Chichigalpa, Nicaragua, a family-owned operation that has been making rum continuously since 1890.

Nicaragua sits just outside the traditional Caribbean island rum belt, but its rums are deeply Caribbean in character and Flor de Cana is one of the most respected names in the category.

The Centenario 12 Year Old is slow-aged in American white oak barrels that previously held bourbon, maturing in the natural heat of Nicaragua without the addition of artificial colours or sugar, a distinction the distillery has long maintained and one that sets it apart from many other aged rums on the market.

The 12 year age statement reflects genuine barrel time, and the result is a rum that shows real complexity without becoming heavy or cloying. Column distillation gives it a clean, firm backbone while the extended wood contact adds layers of dried fruit, baking spice, and vanilla.

24 it sits in a genuinely competitive position for a 12 year aged rum of this quality and reputation. It works well served neat, over a single large ice cube, or as the base for a serious rum cocktail.

For anyone exploring aged rums beyond the usual Barbadian or Jamaican benchmarks, this is an essential and rewarding bottle.
