Don Julio 1942 is produced at Destilería La Primavera in the Los Altos highlands of Jalisco, Mexico, a region known for its red clay soils and cooler temperatures that encourage agave plants to develop higher sugar concentrations and more nuanced flavor.
The liquid is made from fully mature Blue Weber agave, harvested after seven to ten years of growth, and aged for a minimum of two and a half years in American white oak barrels, well beyond the legal minimum for añejo tequila.
That extended aging is the defining feature of 1942, pushing it into an ultra-añejo adjacent style without formally carrying that designation. The result is a tequila with pronounced oak influence, caramel richness, and a softness that makes it approachable neat.
Don Julio González founded the brand in 1942 at age 17, and the expression is named in honor of that year. While the 50ml format naturally limits the experience compared to a full pour, it provides an honest introduction to one of Mexico's most recognizable luxury tequilas.
This is a bottle for someone who wants to explore the sweeter, more barrel-forward end of the añejo category, or for gifting when a full bottle isn't the right call. It belongs on a shelf alongside aged spirits rather than mixed cocktails.
