Cointreau is produced by the Cointreau family in Saint-Barthélemy-d'Anjou, near Angers in the Loire Valley of France, where it has been made since 1875.

Édouard Cointreau developed the original recipe by combining the dried peels of both sweet and bitter oranges with a neutral beet spirit, creating a triple sec that became the defining standard for the category.

What separates Cointreau from most competitors is its use of real orange peel rather than artificial flavoring, and the careful balance between the sweet Valencia orange peel and the more aromatic bitter peel sourced from regions including Spain and Brazil.

The result is a liqueur that is both transparent and complex, with a clean sweetness that does not feel cloying. At 40 percent alcohol, it has enough structure to perform in cocktails rather than simply adding sugar.

It is the specified orange liqueur in a Margarita, Cosmopolitan, Sidecar, and White Lady, and its versatility across both classic and contemporary cocktails has made it a standard in professional bar programs worldwide. It also works well served over ice as a light digestif.

For home bartenders building a serious liqueur shelf, Cointreau is a foundational bottle that earns its place through consistent quality and genuine utility rather than novelty.
