Cointreau is a triple sec orange liqueur produced by the Cointreau family in Saint-Barthélemy-d'Anjou, near Angers in France's Loire Valley. The company was founded in 1849, and the current recipe was developed by Édouard Cointreau in 1875.
It is made by macerating and distilling a blend of sweet and bitter orange peels, both dried and fresh, sourced from various regions around the world. The resulting spirit is clear, which distinguishes it from many other orange liqueurs that rely on added colour.
The alcohol content sits at 40 percent ABV, giving it enough structure to integrate well in cocktails without disappearing into the mix. Cointreau is one of the foundational ingredients in the Margarita, the Cosmopolitan, the Sidecar, and the Corpse Reviver No.
2, among many other classic cocktails, and its versatility has made it a bar staple for well over a century. The 375ml format suits home bartenders who want a genuine triple sec for cocktails without committing to a full litre.
Cointreau consistently delivers a clean, bright orange character that cheaper alternatives tend to approximate but rarely match, making it the benchmark against which other triple sec products are measured.
