Madiran built for the table. Tannat this structured needs something to push against, so aim for duck confit, cassoulet, or anything braised low and slow; the grip softens against fat and collagen in a way it simply won't around lighter food.

Chateau Bouscasse is one of the flagship estates of Alain Brumont, the figure widely credited with reviving the Madiran appellation in southwestern France.

Madiran is a small but serious red wine region in the Gascony foothills, and its defining grape is Tannat, one of the most structurally intense varieties in France, known for high tannins, deep colour, and strong aging potential.

Brumont acquired Bouscasse in 1979 and has farmed it with a focus on low yields and traditional winemaking that respects the character of Tannat without softening it into something unrecognizable.

This wine is typically a blend dominated by Tannat with supporting roles from Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, which add some aromatic lift and soften the otherwise firm tannic backbone.

The result is a wine with real regional identity, the kind of bottle that rewards a few years of cellaring but can also be opened now alongside a hearty meal. It overdelivers for its price, sitting in a category where quality-to-value is rarely this strong.

For anyone interested in exploring beyond the familiar Bordeaux and Rhone corridors, Madiran under Brumont is a worthwhile detour that holds its own against wines costing significantly more.
