Chartreuse Green

Green Chartreuse is produced by the Carthusian monks of the Grande Chartreuse monastery in the Chartreuse Mountains of France. The monks have distilled since 1737, from a recipe said to originate from a manuscript given to them in 1605.

It is one of the few liqueurs still made by a religious order, and the full recipe is known to two monks at a time. It is made from a maceration of 130 wild and cultivated alpine plants, flowers and herbs, distilled, blended with grape spirit and aged in oak barrels.

At 55 percent ABV it is stronger than most liqueurs. The colour is natural, from chlorophyll in the plants, and no artificial colouring or flavouring is added. It is used in cocktails such as the Last Word and the Bijou, and served chilled as a digestif or over ice. This is the 375 ml size.
