Plymouth Gin has been produced at the Black Friars Distillery in Plymouth, England since 1793, making it one of the oldest working distilleries in the country. The historic building, a former Dominican monastery dating to the 15th century, lends its name to this storied spirit.
Plymouth Gin holds a unique geographical indication, meaning it can only be produced within the city walls of Plymouth. This batch gin follows the classic Plymouth style, which sits between a London Dry and a more botanical-forward contemporary gin.
The recipe features seven botanicals: juniper, coriander seed, orange peel, lemon peel, angelica root, orris root, and cardamom. The result is softer and earthier than a typical London Dry, with less aggressive juniper and more rounded citrus notes.
2% ABV, it offers excellent balance for both cocktails and considered sipping. Plymouth Gin has historical significance as the original gin specified in the first published recipe for a Dry Martini.
It performs beautifully in classic cocktails like the Martini, Gimlet, and Pink Gin, where its subtle complexity can shine without overwhelming other ingredients. The slightly sweeter, more full-bodied character also makes it approachable neat or with a simple tonic and citrus twist.
