The Balvenie distillery sits in Dufftown, the heart of Speyside, where it has been producing single malt whisky since 1892. The 12 Year Old DoubleWood represents a pioneering approach to cask maturation that has since become widely imitated across the industry.

This expression spends its first twelve years maturing in traditional American oak ex-bourbon barrels before being transferred to European oak sherry casks for an additional nine months of finishing. This secondary maturation adds depth and complexity without overwhelming the distillery's signature honeyed character.

The Balvenie maintains its own floor maltings and employs a dedicated coppersmith, traditions that speak to the distillery's commitment to craft. Master Malt David Stewart, who has overseen production for over five decades, developed this dual-cask technique in 1982.

The result is a Speyside single malt that balances the vanilla sweetness of bourbon cask aging with the dried fruit richness imparted by sherry wood.
