Disaronno Originale is produced by Illva Saronno, a family-founded company based in Saronno, in the Lombardy region of northern Italy. The liqueur has been made there since 1525, and the recipe traces back to a gift of apricot kernel oil infused with herbs and fruits, presented to the artist Bernardino Luini.
Today, Disaronno remains a proprietary recipe based on absolute alcohol, burnt sugar, and the pure oil of apricot kernel, along with a blend of herbs and fruits. Despite the name, it contains no almonds, which makes it suitable for most people with tree nut allergies, though individual sensitivities vary.
The distinctive square-shouldered bottle with its stopper cap has become iconic in bars worldwide. Disaronno works particularly well in cocktails, most notably the Amaretto Sour, where its sweetness is balanced by fresh lemon juice. It also pairs with espresso in a Godfather variant or poured over vanilla ice cream.
At this price point it represents strong value for a liqueur with genuine historical depth and wide culinary versatility. Its consistent sweetness and almond-like character make it a practical and crowd-pleasing bottle to have on hand.
