Natural Wine at the Shop: A Nod to Jules Chauvet

If you have been in the shop lately, you may have noticed we carry a growing section of organic, biodynamic, and natural wines. We get asked about them often enough that it felt worth writing something down. At the heart of what makes these wines interesting is a simple idea: let the land and the grapes do the talking. And no one made that case more persuasively than Jules Chauvet, often called the Godfather of Natural Wine.

Jules Chauvet: A Visionary

Jules Chauvet wasn't just a winemaker; he was a visionary. Born in the Beaujolais region of France in 1907, Chauvet grew up surrounded by vineyards. But instead of sticking to the status quo, he chose a different path, one that would change the world of wine forever. With a background in chemistry, Chauvet began experimenting with winemaking methods that were, at the time, considered radical. He believed that wine should be an expression of its terroir, the land where it was grown, and that this could only be achieved through minimal intervention.

In an era when most winemakers were turning to chemicals and additives to standardize their wines, Chauvet took a stand. He argued for the use of native yeasts, which naturally occur on the grapes and in the vineyard, instead of commercial yeasts that could mask the wine's true character. He also championed the idea of using little to no sulfur dioxide, a preservative commonly used in winemaking, to allow the wine's natural flavors to shine through.

Chauvet's approach wasn't popular at first. Many in the traditional wine industry dismissed his ideas as unreliable, even risky. But he persisted, and over time, his methods began to gain traction. Today, his influence can be seen in the practices of winemakers around the world who are committed to producing wines that are true to their origins.

The Gang of Four

One of the most significant legacies of Chauvet's work is the group of winemakers known as the Gang of Four. These disciples of Chauvet, Marcel Lapierre, Jean Foillard, Guy Breton, and Jean-Paul Thévenet, took his teachings to heart and applied them to their own winemaking in Beaujolais. Their wines, known for their purity and vibrant expression of the terroir, have become icons in the natural wine movement.

Why We Love These Wines

Natural wines are not for everyone, and that is fine. Some are wild and funky, some are faultlessly clean, most land somewhere in between. What they share is a sense of place that can be genuinely exciting to taste. When a wine is made with minimal intervention, you are getting a more direct read on the vintage, the soil, and the grower's choices. That is interesting to us, and it is interesting to a lot of our customers.

We carry natural wines alongside everything else we stock -- great conventional bottles, BC producers, craft beer, spirits. Nobody has to drink them. But if you are curious, we are happy to point you toward something approachable and explain what you are tasting and why. That is the fun part of the job.

Next time you are in, ask us what is open. We usually have something from the natural section worth trying.

Cheers to Jules Chauvet, and to anyone curious enough to try something a little different.
