The Macallan 12 Year Single Malt

The name everyone knows, and for good reason. Twelve years in sherry-seasoned oak gives Macallan its signature: dried fruit, vanilla, a warm spice that lingers. Smooth without being soft. It is the safe answer that still feels like a real gift, the bottle he will be quietly pleased you recognized.

A splash of water opens it up. Good with dark chocolate or a cigar on the porch.

Shelter Point Craft Single Malt

Vancouver Island, BC  ·  $102.49

Proof you do not have to cross an ocean for a serious single malt. Shelter Point is a grain-to-glass farm distillery on the east coast of Vancouver Island, growing their own barley and distilling it on site. Soft, malty, with orchard fruit and a clean finish. For the dad who likes a bit of pride-of-place in his glass.

A great introduction for the dad who thinks he only likes Scotch.

Mission Hill Reserve Meritage

West Kelowna, Okanagan, BC  ·  $37.91

The bell tower on the hill is one of the most recognizable sights in BC wine, and the Reserve Meritage is the estate doing what it does best: a polished Bordeaux-style blend with dark fruit, soft tannins, and a little oak spice. Approachable, confident, and a name dad will recognize the second he reads the label.

A dependable Sunday-roast red. Great with beef, lamb, or a loaded burger.

Painted Rock Cabernet Sauvignon

One of the South Okanagan's flagship estates, perched on the Skaha Bench above the lake. The Cabernet is polished and ageworthy, full of cassis and dark cherry with firm, fine tannins and a long finish. This is the BC red you open to show someone that the valley plays in the big leagues.

Le Vieux Pin Syrah Cuvée Violette

Le Vieux Pin is a boutique estate in Oliver with a Rhône sensibility and a near-cult following among BC wine people. Cuvée Violette is their Syrah: savoury and peppery with a floral lift and dark berry fruit, the kind of bottle that rewards a dad who actually pays attention to what is in the glass.
